ChatGPT, Twint? Who like to trust the Swiss with their data

According to a current representative survey, Twint has established itself as the “most secure digital payment method” in this country. There is great interest in AI services, but trust is low.

The Swiss are already making extensive use of artificial intelligence (AI): This is evident from the latest ‘data trust study’ by the internet comparison service Comparis. According to the announcement, 17 percent of respondents said they used ChatGPT, Midjourney, Google Bard or similar AI services.

The key findings on AI use that emerged from the representative survey:

  • The 15 to 35 age group in particular uses AI services controlled by algorithms. Here it is already 25 percent. This is 14 percent for 36 to 55 year olds and 9 percent for those over 55.
  • Nearly twice as many men as women used AI, 21 percent versus 12 percent.
  • Well-educated people with a high level of education are significantly more ‘AI-savvy’ (22 percent compared to 10 percent with a low level of education). This was also reflected in household incomes of over 8,000 francs (23 percent compared to 15 percent with middle or low incomes).

Compare digital expert Jean-Claude Frick:

“Younger internet users are generally more willing to experiment with new technologies. Well-educated people rate the potential of AI solutions more highly and see the use of AI in their work as an advantage.”

But when it comes to handling customer data, AI still struggles, putting ChatGPT and Co on the same level as social media platforms, the statement said. Only dating portals would be rated even worse in terms of trust.

“In our opinion, the low trust in AI chat systems stems from the fact that AI solutions such as ChatGPT and Google Bard analyze enormous amounts of data, where data protection generally does not play a role and repeatedly leads to legal disputes.”

Who do people trust most when handling customer data?

Just like previous years (see resources below) When it comes to the serious handling of customer data, respondents trust banks the most (average value 6.9), followed by the authorities (6.8). Insurers have again lost a significant 0.2 points compared to the previous year and gained only 6.1 points, according to Comparis.

What about online payment?

Even after the corona-related lockdowns and the associated trend towards online purchases, confidence in digital payment methods has increased in Switzerland. Twint has clearly established itself as a leader, well ahead of the payment services of large technology companies such as Apple.

Explanation from the digital expert:

“The ability to easily and quickly transfer money between private individuals – something that competing services such as Apple or Samsung Pay still lack – together with its origins in Switzerland and the support of Swiss banks, strengthens confidence in the local payment service and allows users keep getting up.”

And now the overview of the most reliable payment methods according to the Comparis trust survey 2023:

  • Those surveyed consider the classic invoice to be the safest. For an average of 8.2 on the trust scale, which ranges from 1 to 10, we took first place.
  • Twint comes in second place with an average trust value of 7.3, which means that the payment app is considered the second safest payment method among Swiss financial institutions (in 2020 the average was 6.2).
  • Third place went to payment cards such as Postcard, Maestro and V-Pay (average value 7.1 on the trust scale).
  • Cash on delivery came in fourth place (average value 7).
  • According to the report, the payment systems of the internet giants Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, etc. still achieved a relatively low score (average value 5.9).
  • Although confidence tends to increase, cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin are still at the bottom (current average 4.2, in 2019 it was 3.8).

PS: Data protection and data security remain a problem child

Comparis notes that the increasing use of social media services has not led to more caution among users. Only 47 percent would pay attention to privacy settings on social media platforms. This value has remained stable over the years.

Despite “increasingly reliable” password managers and automatic password storage services, only about a third of respondents still use their own password for each service. IT security experts have been advising against the reuse of easy-to-remember passwords for years.

Moreover, the share of people who regularly change their passwords has remained relatively low. Only about a quarter say they do this. It should be noted that many IT security experts now advise against this. Reason: Changing passwords too often leads to weak passwords being set and users using a scheme that is difficult to guess.

According to a statement from market research institute Innofact, the representative survey was conducted in September 2023 among 1,034 people across Switzerland.
