Now the cat is out of the bag: In just over a month, on November 30, 2023, the first Cybertrucks will be delivered to customers in the US. But only for a very specific circle. The vast majority of those who pre-order the $100 Cybertruck, which starts at $39,900, won’t be able to get behind the wheel of the massive electric model until 2024 at the earliest, and especially from 2025 onwards.

And Tesla isn’t taking any orders for Europe yet. According to Tesla boss Elon Musk (52), the serial model of the space-capable monster pick-up, with its windows made of bulletproof glass and an ultra-rigid and sharp-edged body, is “for a world hostile to humanity”, probably due to the lack of road safety. cannot be confirmed.

Too late, too exaggerated

However, experts now doubt whether the electric truck, which reaches 100 km/h in less than three seconds, will become a bestseller in the United States. Even Tesla boss Elon Musk’s enthusiasm for the combat Cybertruck has waned significantly. The Tesla pick-up was originally supposed to be available to the public as early as 2021, but faced repeated delays until pre-production of the first vehicles finally began last July. Musk justifies this because the vehicle is so unusual (see box) and you have to figure out how to build it first. “We dug our own grave with Cybertruck,” Musk joked during a recent conference call with analysts.

It’s questionable whether Musk’s calculations will still work; It wants to produce 125,000 Cybertrucks a year starting in 2025 and open a new customer base with the flashy model. First of all, it is unclear whether XXL pick-up fans in America will be satisfied with the futuristic appearance of the Cybertruck. Secondly, competition does not sleep. The best, General Motors and Ford, continue to offer their classic-looking big pick-ups with internal combustion engines, some with hybrid drives. Even fully battery-powered versions that were only announced after the Cybertruck presentation in 2019, such as the Ford F-150 Lightning, Hummer EV or Chevrolet Silverado EV, are already available or about to be launched today.

This time, the competitive advantage and traditional vehicle appearances in the market, which should not be underestimated, can definitely slow down the strangely designed Tesla Cybertruck, which is now launched with a long delay.
