Google’s new flagship phone is said to have an annoying display problem

Google has just launched its latest high-end smartphone, the Pixel 8 Pro, and sent it to the first buyers. But now the first problems are presenting themselves. This time it’s about the display and a strange color gradient, which is definitely not what you want.

Google Pixel 8 Pro shows the first weaknesses in the display

The Pixel 8 Pro is the best Android smartphone that Google has launched to date. There’s a new processor that powers crazy AI features, one of the best cameras and a new screen that beat the competition in the first test. But it is precisely this screen that is currently causing problems for some owners – at least the display on it.

Some owners of the Pixel 8 Pro are currently reporting to Reddit that they are complaining about an unwanted color gradient on the Always On Display. The text font suddenly turns reddish on the side. Actually, the font should remain white across the entire screen. This is what it looks like:

But the problem is not uniform. Above, the font on the left side of the screen has turned reddish, in another case the font on the right side has changed color. With another owner, only the center is white and the two sides on the right and left slowly become reddish.

Software or hardware error?

One user suspects that it has to do with the frequency of the display. Google has installed an LTPO panel in the Pixel 8 Pro, which works between 1 and 120 Hz. If the refresh rate becomes very low, the display will change color. If you force 120 Hz, the text is white. It is not yet possible to determine whether this is a software or hardware error.

The strange display on the Pixel 8 Pro’s Always On display appears not only in the final software, but also in the first ‘Android 14 QPR1’ beta. It is not known if and how Google will solve the problem. The error must now be externally investigated.
