Everything at BMW lately revolves around the New Class, which will take the Munich-based company into the all-electric age from 2025. However, BMW knows that models with classic internal combustion engines will continue to be in demand. And so in the future in Munich it will continue to be the case that the customer decides on the type of driving of his car. Focusing on electromobility could be fatal, especially in the volume segment. After all, you want to make money as a world-class producer.
The second model generation of the BMW X2 will therefore be available fully electric from March 2024, but will also be available with three different combustion engines (see box). The two petrol engines are equipped with a mild hybrid 48-volt module, while the diesel engine does not. Internal combustion cars, except the 4×4 X2 M35i, which is the most powerful internal combustion engine, transmit its power to the road through the front wheels. The fully electric iX2 is also an all-wheel drive vehicle. Petrol and diesel engines are equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Compared to the previous model, the new BMW X2 has grown by 19.4 centimeters and now has an impressive length of 4.55 metres. The wheelbase (+ 2.2 cm), width (+ 2.1 cm) and height (+ 6.4 cm) of the SUV Coupé have also increased. The rear of the BMW crossover has been completely redesigned. The angled taillights look like they came from a Lego building set. While the iX2’s trunk lid is adorned with a small spoiler lip, the X2 M35i rounds the corner with a striking carbon spoiler. The X2 has wheels from 18 to 21 inches (about 45 to 53 centimeters).
BMW iX2 weighs 2020 kilograms and has a WLTP range of 449 kilometers thanks to its 64.7 kWh battery. Stromer accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds and continues to a maximum speed of 180 km/h. Consumption is 17.7 kWh/100 km and boot space is between 525 and 1400 liters due to batteries (X2 M35i: 560 to 1470 litres).
DC charging power isn’t particularly fast at 130 kW. However, the energy tank must be filled from 10 percent to 80 percent in 29 minutes. When charging with AC power, the standard onboard charger allows 11 kW and 6.5 hours of charging time from 0 to 100 percent. With optional three-phase 22 kW charging, the time is reduced to 3 hours and 45 minutes.
Despite its coupe shape, the BMW X2 also offers plenty of space in the rear interior. However, due to the battery modules at the rear, you sit much higher in the iX2 than in the combustion engine X2. The large panoramic glass roof also provides pleasant light. The cockpit, as in all modern BMWs, features a 10.25-inch curved display for digital instruments, a 10.7-inch touchscreen and a classic head-up display.
The Munich-based automaker uses the OS 9 operating system for infotainment. BMW took customer criticism seriously and always placed the navigation system’s map view as a fixed menu item. To do this, you can navigate through apps or widgets from top to bottom using the swipe gesture, just like on smartphones. As always with BMW, fun doesn’t come cheap. Prices for the X2 sDrive20i start from 52,100 francs. If you want to drive the iX2 xDrive30 electrically, you need to spend at least 62,100 francs.
