The head of gaming software provider Unity, John Riccitello, is leaving following controversy over a new pricing model that has turned game developers against the company. The position will be temporarily taken over by the former head of software supplier Red Hat, James Whitehurst.
Unity announced this on Tuesday evening. Unity provides a so-called game engine, a software environment in which the game is developed and displayed. This makes the company an important partner for many game providers.
In September, Unity introduced a new pricing model. The gist was that developers had to pay a fee every time their game was installed after exceeding 200,000 downloads or $200,000 in sales. Those affected criticized, among other things, the fact that this should also apply to free games – and that this would hit small providers especially hard. Some developers announced they would be switching to competing game engine platforms.
Following the upheaval in the sector, some changes have already been scaled back. Unity left the controversy unmentioned in its announcement of Riccitiello’s departure. (saw/sda/dpa)
