While the VW brand is making an almost mad push towards electromobility, internal combustion engines still play the main role at Czech subsidiary Skoda. With approximately 792,000 Kodiaq models sold worldwide, the large-capacity SUV is a true success story.

The second generation of the bestseller is intended to continue writing this story. The new Skoda Kodiaq will be slightly larger than its predecessor. As Skoda wants to use more electricity in the future, its SUV flagship will also have plug-in hybrid drive for the first time. Following its world premiere on Wednesday, uncamouflaged photos of the new Kodiaq emerged.

Has it grown?

Since the cars of the Czech VW subsidiary have always been characterized by their generous space, the length of the new Kodiaq has increased by six centimeters, reaching 4.76 meters. Height of 1.66 meters remained unchanged. Third-row passengers can be happy, though: headroom is now 1.5 centimeters more than before. With these new dimensions, boot volume also increases: 340 to 845 liters in the seven-seat model, or even 910 liters without the third row of seats.

The range of assistance systems is also growing: the new Kodiaq draws on VW’s technical arsenal and, in addition to turn, avoidance and intersection assistants, has an exit warning and automatic emergency braking assistant for pedestrians at the rear of the vehicle. It’s exciting: The driver can “program” the Kodiaq over a distance of 50 meters (for example, a parking maneuver) and the SUV will independently carry out what it has learned.

Two diesels, two gasoline and one hybrid

Skoda Kodiaq shares technology with VW Tiguan. For the first time, Kodiaq features a plug-in hybrid drive with a system output of 150 kW (204 hp). The more powerful powertrain of 200 kW (272 hp) is reserved for the Tiguan. The Czech SUV can travel approximately 100 kilometers completely electric with its 19.7 kWh battery.

The entry-level model comes with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with 110 kW (150 hp). The most powerful petrol version has 150 kW (204 hp) and, like the two-litre diesel with 142 kW (193 hp), has all-wheel drive. There is a weaker two-liter diesel with 110 kW (150 hp). What is certain is that Skoda will add a powerful RS version to the new Kodiaq with a turbo petrol engine and 195 kW (265 hp). All come with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission; Kodiaq number two will no longer be available for manual operation.

Every efficient ride starts with the lowest possible air resistance. The new Kodiaq starts with a drag coefficient of 0.28. This is achieved through aerodynamic tricks: adapted air ducts in the engine as well as optimizations on the body such as the brakes and an extended roof spoiler.

Sustainable and smart

When it comes to the interior, Skoda follows the zeitgeist and focuses on sustainability wherever possible. The textiles in the seat upholstery, dirt carpets and headliner are made of recycled polyester. Depending on its characteristics, up to 40 percent pure wool is added. Even the famous ice scraper and umbrella are made from environmentally friendly materials.

The automatic lever on the XL SUV has been moved to the steering column, meaning more space in the center console. “Smart Dials” are now available, in addition to inductive smartphone charging pads and four cup holders. These three rotary knobs can be equipped with four separate functions, including magnification of the navigation view, volume or driving modes. The central touchscreen is 13 inches in size, and the 10.25-inch digital display behind the steering wheel is complemented by the head-up display.

Skoda is still silent on more precise technical data, specific consumption figures or prices. According to the VW subsidiary, the new XL model Kodiaq will not be launched until mid-2024.
