Mercedes again offers a rustic off-road version for the new E-Class.

If you want the benefits of a station wagon but don’t want to buy an SUV, choose the rustic off-road version from the Mercedes. For the E-Class, this was at least five percent of all T models sold in Switzerland last year.

It is no surprise that the all-terrain version of the new E-Class and its station wagon version called the T-Model are being produced again. It celebrated its world premiere at the IAA International Motor Show in Munich at the beginning of the month. Sales in Switzerland will begin at the end of September and the first deliveries will begin in the first quarter of 2024.

Interesting for frequent travelers

Test tour with the 4.95 meter long Mercedes E 300 All-Terrain. Currently, no competing models from Audi, BMW and Co. offer such a diesel plug-in hybrid, combining the best of two worlds: electric drive and economical diesel with charging option. However, this is also expensive with the internal combustion engine, which is more expensive than the gasoline engine, and the battery, which is not cheap.

What makes the E 300 de All-Terrain we drove interesting is that the image-rich six-cylinder diesel engine is missing from Mercedes’ current starting portfolio and, at least on paper, the E 220 d offers slightly less power for a vehicle that’s a bit less powerful. Two-ton station wagon with just under 200 hp.

Things look different in the Mercedes E 300 All-Terrain. Its two-liter four-cylinder diesel engine with 197 hp (145 kW) and 440 Nm of torque is supported by an electric motor in the transmission bell housing, which contributes a further 129 hp (95 kW). Together, this results in a system output of 313 hp (230 kW) and an impressive 700 Nm of maximum torque.

Sporty and economical

Anyone who doubts a roaring athlete is wrong. In the E 300, the All-Terrain accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in less than seven seconds and reaches a top speed of 210 km/h. However, the drive remains acoustically discreet and the hybrid module with electric motor and battery pack weighing over 150 kilograms allows the family station wagon to weigh over 2.2 tonnes when empty. On the other hand, the battery with a capacity of 19.4 kilowatt hours (kWh) located under the body allows the so-called off-road vehicle to drive fully electric up to 100 kilometers, which is quite impressive.

Advert

So, if you regularly charge from the socket, you will either drive fully electric and use approximately 20 kWh of energy per 100 kilometers, or you will need less than one liter of diesel fuel per 100 kilometers. And all this is particularly comfortable thanks to the standard single-chamber air suspension, which increases ground clearance by up to 46 millimeters.

Although sales in Switzerland will begin at the end of the month (first deliveries will occur in the first quarter of 2024), there is no official price yet. What is known, however, is that there will be an all-terrain version of the E 220 d, E 300 de and E 450 station wagons.
