Other factors besides the brand, model and mileage affect the price of a second-hand car.

What determines the (residual) value of a car? Age, mileage, condition? Of course, but there are many other parameters. This value is particularly important in the used car business, as approximately 750,000 used cars are sold each year. Sometimes there’s a lot of money involved. Considering the fluctuations in recent years, second-hand vehicle prices stand out in particular.

Experts at Farie emphasize that in addition to brand, model, equipment and mileage, statistical values and market analysis are also included in pricing. “We analyze around 1,000 cars every day to know the market exactly,” says data scientist Marco Morf. Thanks to this data, the online store can offer cars at market-oriented, transparent sales prices. What is surprising is what affects the selling price of a used car.

What role does color play?

What most people don’t realize is that the color of the vehicle also plays an important role. If the sports car in question is not the famous Ferrari red, black, silver or white paint is worth the money. On the other hand, very bright colors also darken income. Is this why nearly three-quarters of the cars on Swiss roads are in these colours? Anyway, white, black or anthracite colored cars are most in demand in Farie.

What prevails outside also applies to the interior: Here too, elegant colours, common materials and serene patterns pay off beyond extravagance. Contemporary equipment also has an impact on the price, as Farie experts note: “Buyers attach great importance to reliable driving assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking systems and parking assistants.”

Up to 2,500 francs more

Farie says the navigation system and connectivity, namely Android Auto or Apple Car Play, are also important. Systems that are now standard on many vehicles in Switzerland.

If the car is in good condition and the colour, interior and equipment match, this will add another 2,500 francs to the sales price, says data scientist Marco Morf.

What is wanted?

There are vehicles that are especially sought after. In Switzerland, Volkswagen Group cars are always among the best sellers. Whether new or used car: VW, Audi and Skoda are far ahead. This year, VW is ahead of Skoda, Audi, BMW and Mercedes in terms of market share. This also coincides with reviews of online vehicle searches, as reported by comparison service Comparis.

The absence of Tesla, which has been Switzerland’s best-selling car for several years, according to Comparis, is due to the fact that only a few of these vehicles are available on the second-hand market. Farie always has models of the electric pioneer available. Farie CEO Johannes Weirather says electric cars are increasingly in demand: “For us, the Tesla Model 3 is clearly the crowd favourite. If we offer it, it will be sold in record time.”

Expressed in data, this means for the online retailer: Tesla Model 3 is selling 32 percent faster than Tesla Model Y and 18 percent faster than BMW. For comparison: On average, a used car in Switzerland remains on sale for about 60 days before being taken back and driven again.

Which cars to buy online?

In addition to the Tesla Model 3, small and medium-sized cars with automatic transmission and low fuel consumption are also selling very well in Farie. SUVs or station wagons with large trunks are in great demand among families. So if you are looking for this type of cars, you should not hesitate for a long time.

The online store offers a 14-day money-back guarantee because Farie relies on digital commerce and discourages booking appointments or test drives. This means that the car can be tested extensively in everyday life. If it does not fit, it can be returned. In addition, second-hand cars are delivered with 30-day insurance and can be redeemed to the owner if desired. This means you can hit the road right away.

The price is transparent from the beginning. There is no need for any negotiation. The rental rates displayed on the website correspond to the actual offer. Condition, equipment, set of tires and service history are also documented in detail and cars are sold with a minimum warranty of twelve months. If the manufacturer’s warranty extends beyond this, it remains valid.
