A French regulator is threatening to recall Apple’s three-year-old iPhone 12. Tests showed that electromagnetic radiation was above the limit values, the authority announced.
The Agence Nationale des Frequences (ANFR) ordered on Tuesday that devices of the model must be removed from all French sales channels. If Apple does not correct the values with an update “as soon as possible”, the devices in circulation in France would also have to be recalled.
There was initially no response from Apple to the move by the French authorities. The company presented the next generation of its smartphone on Tuesday evening: the iPhone 15 with multiple models.
According to the announcement, ANFR recently had 141 smartphones examined in a laboratory to determine how much electromagnetic radiation the body absorbs during their operation.
It turned out that the limit for direct physical contact – for example in the hand or in the pocket – was exceeded with the iPhone 12. Instead of the maximum permitted 4 watts per kilogram, this was 5.74 watts per kilogram. The authority wants to have control over a possible update from Apple.
However, the iPhone 12 met the limit of two watts per kilogram for radiation levels at a distance of five millimeters from the body, the ANFR writes. It applies to situations where a mobile phone is carried in a jacket or bag, for example.
These specifications require the device to be tested at touch (0mm) for extremity SAR measurements (when the phone is held in the hand or in a pocket) and at a distance of 5mm for body SAR measurements (when the phone is in your pocket). jacket pocket or in a bag.
The values must therefore comply with the maximum limits of 4 watts/kg for SAR limbs and 2 watts/kg for SAR body.”
