As a California camper, the iconic VW Bulli is probably the best-known camper van in the world and was first launched in 1989, based on the then VW T3. The iconic trailer has been sold 165,000 times over four generations. The current generation is based on the VW T6.1 carrier from 2019; however, the latest generation of the T7 panel van has been on the market for two years.
That’s why camping enthusiasts miss the camper version of the T7. The wait will soon be over: the VW T7 California concept is currently celebrating its premiere at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf (D). The trailer will also feature a plug-in hybrid drive for the first time. According to ID, by 2025, California would be all-electric. The buzz should start – but due to weight issues, nothing will come of it for now.
California, which will later be based on the modular transverse matrix of the Volkswagen Group and the still young T7, takes a step into the future. Not only does it offer a lot of flexible space, but its functions can be operated via the touchscreen and tablet. Although VW is reluctant to elaborate on the drive system at this time, in addition to the front-wheel drive diesel engine, a plug-in version with optional all-wheel drive will soon arrive, as is the case with the new Ford Nugget.
For the first time, the new T7 California will feature two sliding doors on the left and right, and a particularly practical kitchen solution. Working close to the range, it is equipped with an articulated arm awning on one side and a sun sail on the other. This protects both sides from rain or sun.
Behind two open sliding doors, the T7 California Concept offers a completely redesigned interior, which should not differ greatly from the later series version. Swivel front seats allow four people to sit flexibly facing each other, with or without an inside table. In the study, seats were placed, which, unlike the previous VW T6.1, are easier to remove. Thanks to this variable seat structure, large objects can be transported more easily than before.
Even more space is found in the separate storage areas under the bed extension and in the kitchen cabinets that are conveniently accessible from the inside and outside. Now a compact grill is stored in the kitchen block. In addition to the 230 volt induction hob, the new trailer also features an integrated gas hob like its predecessors. Night owls can rejoice: For the first time, the sunroof has USB-C sockets and LED lights.
VW does not provide further details on prices or technical data. Still, fans can look forward to next summer: The new VW T7 California should celebrate its premiere with different driving concepts next camp season.
