Japanese auction 160 pieces at RM Sotheby’s: Schumi collection is in danger

Eleven years ago, Michael Schumacher gave up his driving shoes after seven Formula One world titles. A passionate Schumi fan from Japan collected them along with racing suits, baseball caps, fireproof underwear, helmets and liquor bottles. The superfan is auctioning a total of 160 selected items from his collection online through auction house RM Sotheby’s, with auctions running through September 6.

RM Sotheby’s calls the auction “Full Throttle – The Schumacher Collection.” The collection includes more than 75 racing suits and gear from Schumacher’s career; including helmets from their early days in karting. Some were race-worn, some were not. Among other things: a helmet he wore in racing in his first season in Formula 3 in 1989, or a bottle of champagne signed by Ayrton Senna (1960-1994) and Alain Prost (68). The unknown Schumi fan in Japan has been putting together his collection for over 30 years. There are also works by Michael’s brother Ralf (48) and his son Mick (24).

But RM Sotheby’s is also in full swing on expected revenue. The windshield of a Ferrari F1 car by Schumi is expected to cost US$3,000; today (September 1, 6pm) for just $155. In contrast, five drinking bottles, currently valued at US$1,100, have already exceeded expectations (US$750). Expect up to US$20,000 for Michael Schumacher’s racing suits and up to US$60,000 for some helmets. Five days until the hammer falls.
