Google employees in the US are not going hungry. This is evident from a document intended for internal use that was leaked to the news portal Business Insider. In a 2022 internal salary survey, more than 12,000 Google employees disclosed their salary.
Thus, the median salary at Google in the US was $279,802, based on the employees who reported their salary for the internal survey. This also includes all other compensation such as share packages and bonuses, which can significantly increase the total compensation.
From the information provided voluntarily by 12,000 of the total of more than 100,000 employees, it is far from clear that Google earns an average of $ 280,000. But “the table gives us the best insight yet into how much the tech giant pays its employees,” the news portal writes.
So what makes Google jump?
Software developers reported by far the highest base salaries in the salary survey. The highest-paid developer position in the leaked document has a base salary of $718,000, Business Insider writes. Most software engineers reported salaries ranging from $100,000 to $375,000.
According to the report, top salaries in sales, research, lobbying, UX design and legal ranged from $300,000 to $377,000.
Employees who have been with Google longer and occupy higher positions, of course, earn more.
Google declined to comment specifically on the leak to the news portal. A spokeswoman only made a general statement that her employees are offered attractive terms of employment.
The high wages, even compared to Switzerland, are partly explained by the exorbitant cost of living in Silicon Valley and the fierce competition from big tech companies like Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia and many others. Rents are extremely high around San Francisco. In addition, the US state of California has one of the highest income tax rates in the United States.
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai received $226 million in 2022. Of those, 218 million were stock prices.
At the end of September 2022, it employed nearly 187,000 people, according to the Alphabet Group. At the beginning of 2022, it was announced that 12,000 jobs would disappear worldwide. Google’s Zurich headquarters was also hit by the job cuts.
