How far, how long does it take? Who does not know these questions? It doesn’t matter if it’s a long day’s journey or an hour’s drive on vacation: when parents or grandparents are driving, the kids in the backseats feel bored.

The easiest thing to do then is to calm the whining kids with a mobile phone or tablet and a game or movie. But with a little imagination, there are other ways to make car travel more enjoyable and fun for children and therefore adults.

Story time with bugs

Many parents can still remember their own childhood and car journeys. Simple games like “I see something you can’t see” or “I’m packing my suitcase” were often played there. The faulty fairy tale clock is fun, and even more challenging for adults: A person in the car tells a well-known fairy tale and conjures up minor mistakes and inconsistencies. Young people need to figure this out.

The game “Know my song” is also popular among young and old. Children’s songs for the little ones or lists for the grown-ups: A parent hums a well-known melody. Everyone guesses and the first to recognize the song gets a score and starts singing the next song. There’s fun in the car – and the volume is usually pretty loud.

But there is another situation in the car. There is suddenly a silence in the backseat and he says meekly, “I’m sick.” It is then important to react quickly. The child should concentrate on a fixed point on the horizon. Chewing movements distract attention and help against nausea. It is also recommended to have chewing gum and low-fat snacks such as pretzels or apple slices with you for long trips in the car.

Break and self massage

However, if travel sickness comes on suddenly, a short break is usually most effective. You can take some fresh air and calm your feelings that are disturbed by conflicting movements. Self-massage is helpful in case of sudden travel nausea and is especially recommended for older children and adults. The so-called Nei Kuan point is said to have a targeted effect against motion sickness. It is centered on the inside of the forearm, two centimeters below the wrist. Pressing each lever for at least a minute or longer is said to eliminate travel sickness.

We hope our tips will help travel-afflicted children and parents on their summer vacation car journey make this long journey a little more comfortable and enjoyable.
