The weekend is still very hot and many people are traveling south for their summer vacation. It’s good to laugh if your car has air conditioning. At the touch of a button, you can easily set the ideal feel-good climate in the vehicle interior.

However, not all vehicles have this comfort option. In particular, old and young timers or older small cars often don’t have air conditioning – or it’s faulty. Also, there is no longer a gaseous refrigerant (Freon) for legacy air conditioning systems. Therefore, here are a few practical tips so that the journey does not become an ordeal that steals your concentration and makes you sweat, even when there is no air conditioning in the vehicle.

Preparation is everything. Never allow heat to enter your car. If you park your car (in the shade if possible), use window mats, which are especially popular with campers and effectively block the sunlight. A thermal mat on the windscreen prevents the dashboard and interior from getting hot. Other sets of thermal mats for the side and rear windows complement this effective sun protection. When there are children in the vehicle, sun protection films for the rear windows or roller blinds with suction cups are also recommended. If necessary, a light-colored bath towel will also work.
Little extra tip: If you have a car with dark upholstery, place light-colored towels over the seats, as well as over the dashboard and steering wheel. Light-colored seat covers (or fabric) reflect light and prevent you from feeling like a grilled sausage when driving in the heat.

Vent the heat in the car

If you get into a heated vehicle, open all doors and windows before driving so that the hot air can escape. You can speed up this process, for example by opening and closing the driver’s door several times in succession, effectively expelling the hot air inside the vehicle.
Little extra tip: It’s no secret – when driving in a car without air conditioning, the flow of air through the open windows creates a pleasant breeze.

Wet cloths in ventilation

We know its effect from the southern countries: If you hang a damp cotton blanket or towel in front of the room window in summer, evaporative cooling takes place. We can use this effect in the car by hanging damp cotton fibers or kitchen towels in front of the air vents. This should provide minimal cooling and is definitely worth a try.
Little extra tip: Thermal water sprays for the face (from the cold box) or cold compresses for the neck and forearms (also from the cold box) are a welcome refreshment supplement for, for example, overheated passengers or whining children.

put the fan in the car

If the car does not have air conditioning, we help ourselves or we can make it ourselves, for example, by buying a portable fan that can be connected to the car with on-board electronics (cigarette lighter in older cars). It improves air circulation inside the vehicle, making waiting times at red lights, level crossings or traffic jams more bearable. However, it is important that the additional fan installed in the vehicle does not obstruct the view and does not fall down when braking.
Little extra tip: In the accessory trade, there are vehicle-specific air-conditioned seat covers, and there are seat covers that can be connected to the cigarette lighter and thus provide cooling.

And finally, one last tip: wear airy and comfortable clothes in the car made from natural materials such as cotton, hemp or linen. They absorb sweat, reflect light, and therefore are more comfortable in the heat. People with long hair should tie it at the back so that the neck does not get too hot.

If you follow all these recommendations, a summer trip or a trip to the south will not make you sweat, even in cars without air conditioning.
