In order not to get a traffic ticket abroad, you should always have the following with you.

Vacation time is travel time. And for some, it’s as much a part of the holiday as the suitcases: public transport buses abroad.

Some travel destinations, such as Italy, are increasing border controls just in time for public holidays like Easter, Pentecost or summer vacation.

This should be there

Even if this sticker can only be removed with difficulty after a trip abroad: Anyone who does not have a Swiss sticker on their car pays a fine of up to 400 francs. Otherwise, you leave it glued for the next trip.

Other car accessories must also be on board when traveling abroad: for example, the fault triangle is mandatory in most countries. In many countries – especially in Eastern Europe – a car pharmacy is part of mandatory equipment, as is a fluorescent vest.

In Serbia, a tow rope is also part of the basic equipment, and in Estonia, two chocks to prevent the car from skidding on a slope. In France, single-use breathalyzers have been mandatory in cars since 2013, but there is no penalty for not having them with you. By the way, here in Switzerland only the breaking triangle is mandatory.

Alcohol limits and fines

If you do not want to risk fines abroad, you can find out about mandatory accessories on the TCS information platform before you travel. You should also find out if the target area has perimeter and weather protection zones that can only be entered with a valid sticker or vignette. Otherwise there is a risk of heavy fines.

After a glass of wine with dinner during the holidays, you should leave your car behind in most European countries. Because unlike Switzerland, where the limit is still 0.5 per thousand, the drink-driving limit in many countries is gradually moving towards zero tolerance. Albania has the lowest border at 0.1, and Malta and the UK have one of the highest at 0.8 per thousand. In addition to researching fines and alcohol limits, you should also learn about various traffic regulations.
