Fiat brings back the Topolino

Fiat is breathing new life into a cult name: the Topolino is an electric mini-motorcycle for the city and for short distances.

Topolino, little mouse, is how the very first Fiat 500 from the thirties was affectionately baptized by the Italians. And since Fiat is currently doing very well with its retro companions such as the 500 or the future 600e, the developers have not only designed their first car in the “Sustainable Urban Mobility” category, SUM for short, with a retro look, but also with a Retro-named.

What is a SOM? A small vehicle for the city, a maximum speed of 45 km/h and therefore in some countries such as Italy or Germany it can be driven from the age of 15 (in Switzerland probably from the age of 18). Technically, the new electric Topolino is already known: it is closely related to the Citroën Ami and Opel Rocks-e – only designed in the typical Fiat design.

In matt mint green, with round exterior mirrors and the typical googly eyes and barely 2.50 meters long, the Topolino exudes extreme charm. You quickly forget that its eight horsepower is just enough for a top speed of 45 km/h. On the other hand, the original Topolino with its 14 hp was not much faster at the time. And the 5.4 kWh battery lasts up to 75 kilometers.

Fiat wants to offer two versions from the end of the year: On the one hand, a closed version with sun protection on the roof and, on request, door applications with a wood design. Even more charming is the open Topolino. With this variant, only ropes hang where the doors used to be. A beige roll top underlines the longing for eternal summer.

If the wind blows too hot through the cabin, you can quickly refresh yourself with the shower, which can be ordered as an option. At the back, both versions have a retro pocket for luggage; a fan with USB connection or beach towels that can be stored in the dashboard provide a summery feeling.

Enormous driving comfort is not to be expected with the Topolino – the Rocks-e and Ami are not sedans for long distances either. But it’s quite cheap: the little mouse can be ordered online in just three clicks. Anyone who wants to buy it pays a minimum of 7,500 euros in Germany. Swiss prices are not available to us.
