The Netherlands will further restrict the export of machines for making microchips to China. The reason is national security, shared Minister of Foreign Trade Liesje Schreinemacher on Friday with
The goal is that “our technology, Dutch technology, does not end up in the hands of companies or organizations, where the technology can ultimately be used against us,” she told radio station NOS.
The new rules apply from September 1. Restrictions were announced in March, but have now been tightened.
Manufacturer ASML, the world market leader in high-tech machines for the production of semiconductors, is particularly affected. In the future, the company will have to apply for an export license for certain machines.
The export restrictions mainly concern the new DUV technology. The company does not expect any negative financial consequences, according to the company.
The US in particular had urged the Netherlands to severely limit the export of chip technology to China. Other Western countries also fear that the country could use the technology for military purposes.
The Dutch government had already restricted the export of semiconductor technology to China in 2020. Older machines may still be exported.
Industry analysts say China’s lack of access to ASML technology is a problem developing its own chip industry. Chinese suppliers could make simpler chips used in cars and most consumer electronics, but not those in smartphones, servers and other high-end products.
