Convicted: Former Audi boss Rupert Stadler.

The first criminal trials were held in the processing of the diesel oil scandal. The Munich District Court sentenced former Audi boss Rupert Stadler to one year and nine months in prison for negligence fraud.

The two defendants – former head of engine development and later Porsche board member Wolfgang Hatz and engineer P. – received suspended sentences for fraud. These are the first sentences given in Germany in the diesel scandal that emerged in 2015 and shook the entire industry and caused billions of dollars in damage.

Hatz and engineer P. admitted that they were interested in the manipulation of diesel engines. In doing so, they matched the emission values on the test stand, but throttled the emission control on the road. Stadler admitted that he stopped selling the fraudulent cars too late.

Deferred penalties are subject to the payment of high fines. The prosecutor had already upheld the suspended sentences of Stadler and P. as part of a settlement in the process, but sought prison terms without parole in the Hatz case. Decisions are not yet finalized. (SDA)
