Where is Switzerland heading in terms of mobility? Held in Zurich from 30 June to 2 July, the mobility fair E-Nova wants to show what is possible.
Andrew FaustHead of Vehicle and Mobility

The future of mobility is based on multimodal, electric, connected and sharing models. At least that’s what mobility experts and futurologists have predicted for 20 years. Accordingly, in the future, applications will assemble the ideal mix of transport for our routes. We will flexibly switch between public transport for the city centre, shared cars, car-sharing or mobility services such as e-bikes and e-scooters in appropriate centres. In the future, private vehicle ownership will be phased out.

But the reality is different. Swiss people travel two-thirds of their daily kilometers by car. According to the 2023 mobility survey by the Auto-Swiss association of car importers, nearly two-thirds want to continue owning their cars in the future. According to the University of Lucerne and Autoscout24’s Swiss Mobility Monitor 2023, currently only about two percent are willing to buy flexible car subscriptions, where you can use a suitable car in a short time and return it if you don’t need it. .

Electrification is on trend

However, Switzerland is rethinking many areas: as of the end of May, one in five new cars sold in 2023 were all-electric, and almost eight percent were equipped with a plug-in hybrid drive. The biggest hurdle to switching is currently charging in the home: while homeowners can install a wall box themselves, tenants still depend on the landlord’s goodwill and understanding if they want to charge in the superstructure.

Sales of electric bikes are also on the rise: in recent years e-bikes have accounted for around 45 percent of new bike purchases. However, there are only signs of rethinking in sharing models. According to the University of Lucerne and Autoscout24, so-called Generation Z members born between 1995 and 2010 are no longer afraid of shared cars. For them, judicious use of means of transport is more important than owning a car as an expression of personal identity.

Individual mobility return

Information about the diversity of mobility offers remains crucial for the so-called mobility return. The number of providers is constantly increasing, especially when it comes to app-based digitized services such as e-bike sharing. The mobility fair E-Nova, which will be held in Zurich next weekend from 30 June to 2 July, aims to provide a better perspective on innovative mobility concepts. E-bikes and e-scooters are available for test drives. Auto suppliers such as Genesis, Kia, Toyota, Smart and Volvo are demonstrating and offering test drives of new electric and all-electric models.

First of all, you can get the necessary information for your own individual mobility transformation at the trade fair. Where can I download? How can I make my daily routes efficient, climate-friendly and time-saving? And how much do new mobility services cost? Experts will give answers to these questions for three days. The Europaallee and Europaplatz venue are located directly at the Zurich main station. Where else can you learn better about multimodality and the interaction of means of transport?
