Porsche 911 Sport Classic: Is this the most emotional 911?

There are only 1250 Porsche 911 Sport Classics that are visually inspired by the original 911 and the Carrera RS 2.7. The limited small series from Porsche Exclusive Manufactory in Stuttgart revives the sports car styling of the 1960s and 1970s and is the second of four collectors’ items in the Heritage Design Strategy – after the 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition.

You can’t look beyond this 911 because it’s so hard to miss the big 60 on the doors. The light stripes on the bonnet in Sport Gray Metallic also stand out; The 1963 design also has the Porsche crest on the front. Inside, the premium craftsmanship is convincing, with a mix of leather and wood materials. The center panels of the seats and the door panels are covered in checkered Pepita fabric from the 1970s. A cockpit like a time machine that takes us back 50 years.

Enough optics – how does such a collector’s item actually move? You sit comfortably for a sports car; no back problems even after a long ride. The double-charged 3.7-liter 6-cylinder boxer engine delivers 550 hp (405 kW) and 600 Nm of torque; this is enough power transferred entirely to the rear wheels via the 7-speed manual gearbox. In principle, it can be said that the Sport Classic is a 911 Turbo with slightly less power and a manual transmission – technically that is really the case. The chassis is derived from the 911 Turbo and GTS and strikes the perfect balance between long-distance comfort and sporty speed.

The 911 responds very directly to the accelerator pedal. It stays comfortable in normal mode and becomes very toxic in sport mode. The sitting position fits as if it’s grown, the brakes grip as if you were throwing an anchor. Put your hands in the air as you set off in the residential neighborhood in the morning, but on the way, with the exhaust flaps open, the Sport Classic sings and plays the trumpet, giving goosebumps on your neck. The function, called auto-blip, automatically compensates for differences in speed between dual-clutch gears in the transmission by downshifting – our grandparents had to learn this manually in the driving school. This means the 911 is more directly connected to the gas. And it sounds good.

With a 7-speed manual gearbox, you change gears from time to time because the shift pattern has an unusual four lanes. The GT3 Touring’s manual 6-speed transmission certainly fit in, too, making our lives easier. In terms of consumption, the Sport Classic falls in the lower two-digit range, which is almost two liters more than stated. To be fair, we were moving fast too. Those who can give up the starting price of 338,900 Francs should not have any problems with their fuel bills.

Visually there’s a deal – this limited Porsche 911 looks great. Of course, the Sport Classic is illogical – there can be mobility in a small car, too. But which sports car would be different? As with every limited 911 variant, a total of 1250 copies produced have already been sold out. It’s just a shame so many of them get lost in collector’s garages and turn from vehicles to standstill vehicles. It is quite possible that some owners will never experience how much fun the 911 Sport Classic can be.
