More than 100,000 ChatGPT accounts have been leaked on the dark web

Even artificial intelligence is not safe from hackers: within a year, hundreds of thousands of ChatGPT accounts were leaked on the dark web. What that means.

The AI chat robot ChatGPT has been a topic of conversation for several months now. It warns of dangers, especially in relation to how much artificial intelligence will change our lives in the future. But there are real dangers that ChatGPT users should be aware of.

This is shown by a current analysis. Researchers at IT security firm Group-IB have discovered that about 100,000 ChatGPT accesses have been leaked on the dark web. Most of the hacked data comes from the Asia-Pacific region. The values refer to a period of twelve months.

Many users are not yet aware that data from AI services is not always safe. Jake Moore, Global Security Advisor at the security software company ESET, explains in an interview with t-online: “Many users of ChatGPT are unaware that their accounts contain a large amount of sensitive information and are of great interest to cybercriminals. All prompts are saved by default. The more information chatbots get, the more attractive they become to hackers.”

This not only applies to private individuals, but also to employees who use ChatGPT and also enter confidential information into the AI tool. Moore explains that this data can then be used for targeted attacks against companies and their employees.

The cybercriminals are looking for “important information such as cryptocurrency wallet records, logins and passwords, and saved browser logins”.

The expert advises to think carefully about what data you want to enter in cloud-based chatbots and other services. The problem with ChatGPT is that users with a free account have no option to activate two or more factor authentication. That makes the service “extremely vulnerable,” says Moore.

He recommends “disabling the chat storage feature unless absolutely necessary” and using a single sign-on option as well. There is special software for this that you can install and link to ChatGPT. It also makes sense to change your passwords regularly.
