Netflix Reveals More Data: “Wednesday” Beats “Stranger Things”

The Netflix streaming service has changed the way it communicates when it comes to ratings – compiling its top charts over three months instead of just 28 days. There are negative consequences for the hit series “Stranger Things”.

Streaming giant Netflix, known for its secrecy about on-demand data, is now providing more insight into its statistics. The top 10 lists of various categories from the week before (Monday to Sunday), published weekly on Tuesdays since mid-November 2021, now contain new information, the video-on-demand service announced on Tuesday evening.

“While we continue to show hours watched per title, our top 10 lists are now ranked by views,” Netflix said. Until now, the top 10 series and films were only sorted by viewing hours and not by viewing figures.

The number of views cannot be equated with the number of viewers. Actually, the number of views is a mathematical number that Netflix says is the result of dividing the viewing hours by the duration of the production in question.

“We will also extend the qualifying time for our lists of the most popular series and movies from about a month to three months as many of our shows and movies grow significantly over time,” it said.

The new way of collecting has direct consequences. For example, in the “TV (English)” category, “Wednesdays” with Jenna Ortega is suddenly the most popular series – and no longer the fourth season of the sci-fi mystery series “Stranger Things”.

For “Wednesday” there were about 252 million views after 91 days. The fourth season of “Stranger Things” was viewed 1.83 billion hours, but the longer running time of 13 hours and 4 minutes meant significantly fewer views, at 140.7 million.

The eight-part American comedy-horror series “Wednesday”, most of which was filmed in Romania, is surpassed by only one other Netflix production: the Korean nine-part “Squid Game”, which is available under “TV (Non-English)” too. to lead.

The drama series from South Korea had 265.2 million hits in 91 days. As of Tuesday, Netflix had just announced the number of 1.65 billion streamed hours for “Squid Game” — for the first 28 days alone.

The streaming entertainment service Netflix claims to have 233 million paying subscribers worldwide. Its biggest competitors include Amazon’s Disney+ and Prime Video.
