Many drivers seem to have a hard time with the rules regarding the correct use of turn signals and hazard warning lights and other car lights. What about acoustic horn? In a nutshell: We usually honk when it’s forbidden. But seldom when allowed, and above all very seldom when important.
Like the beacon, the horn is for warning and danger avoidance purposes only. Two situations are clearly mentioned in the regulation: the horn should be sounded “if the children are not paying attention to the traffic on the road” and as a post-bus “before the blind, tight bends outside the city”.
But the horn should be used sparingly: you should drive in a way that you don’t have to. So only if it is really necessary – and only during the day: From dusk until the end of the night, the horn is only allowed in emergency situations and the headlights flash. 40 francs to honk unnecessary, it gets expensive depending on the situation.
The passage in which you honk before overtaking in the Traffic Regulations Regulation has been changed. But: If security requires it, you can. This means: Like a beacon, the horn can be used to announce overtaking – the vehicle in front must then facilitate this. What was still normal in the 1970s, is today considered trespassing and – strictly forbidden – responded to with stylish braking or moves. Actually very bad.
But it’s important: A single horn signal should really suffice, at most after a long waiting time another signal will suffice. But anyone who honks, thunders, and approaches (like this driver in the reader’s video) is at risk, at the cost of your identity.
It is not permissible to honk to greet acquaintances. And not at the wedding or the football convoy either – but here it is usually tolerated if you can use your eyes, or rather your ears: if the team’s victory was almost an hour ago, then at some point in the night the horn was blown.
The horn is allowed as little as a selector as a tool for harassment, threats, and revenge. Examples: Lane changer getting too close – note: flashing does not create a space right! – you can warn with the horn. Then scold him with the horn, but don’t.
On the subject of honking, the blue sign with yellow horns marking Bergpoststrasse should also be mentioned – and surprisingly many people don’t seem familiar with it. Here the mail bus “Dü-da-do!” and has priority: The driver’s instructions must be followed – music off, windows open if necessary. And if it gets stuck on mountain roads, you can also sound your horn beforehand.
