Most people get it wrong: where does the fault triangle go?

We have it in our car after learning the rules – but still we often get it wrong: the fault or warning triangle is usually not set up after breakdowns or accidents (60 francs fine). And if it is, then it’s almost always very close (40 Fr. fine).

Setting the fault triangle is mandatory when the vehicle is parked “illegally for force majeure” or is dangerous. And – additionally it will open! – Malfunction lamps (quadruple warning lamps) do not replace it: Malfunction lamps provide recognition of the vehicle, give a triangular warning. Before providing assistance in the event of an accident or calling TCS after a breakdown, you must first secure the location of the malfunction or accident.

But where does it have to go now, the breaking triangle? On the right edge of the affected lane, regardless of whether it is a lane or a hard shoulder. If you are using a parking lot (emergency bay), it does not need to be set up. Distance to vehicle: 50 meters or more and 100 meters or more on roads with “fast traffic” (law). As a general rule, we recommend that the speed limit be equal to the minimum distance (eg country 80m, motorway 120m).

But: How much is 100 meters, for example? Outside the city, the limiters are helpful, they are usually 50 meters away (except on sharp bends, for example). And walk 100 steps otherwise? Jein: Most people have a stride length of 60 to 80 centimeters, so they have very large or more steps. And use common sense: If the danger point is in a curve, the triangle should be in front of it.

Good accessibility is a must

Take care of your own protection during installation and run into traffic holding the triangle in front of your body on the side or behind the crash barrier. And unlike the triangle, it’s not mandatory, but a high-visibility vest and a yellow flashing light are highly recommended. By the way: Outside residential areas, standing or parking lights are mandatory at night.

You should practice opening the pre-folded, transported fault triangle: Anyone who has to secure an accident scene on the highway in the rain at night should know how the triangle unfolds and where it is. It is a legal requirement that it be easily accessible in the car and not under the trunk, for example, on holiday trips.

By the way, the malfunction signal must also be installed behind the towed vehicles. The triangle makes sense even if the car is not parked on the street, for example, after a cold slip in the meadow. On the roof or behind the window it says: Everything is fine, no help needed.
