Apple’s “Vision Pro” – the best comments and really important questions

A former Apple employee explains why the “Vision Pro” can read something like minds. But there are also many funny reactions.
Daniel Schurter

Apple presented the first generation of its mixed reality glasses on Monday evening. And the reactions from all over the world were not long in coming…

What will the app developers do with it?

“Apple Vision Pro – finally you can enjoy porn on the plane”

Security issues, anyone?

What was the first conspiracy theory about the new gadget?

“Unless I’ve missed something, I find it very odd that there are no photos of Tim Cook or other Apple executives wearing the Vision Pro. If that’s the case, then of course it was a calculated decision. The question is why ?”

Plausible explanation:

In fact, the Apple boss liked to pose next to the new gadget. But setting it up yourself? no!

And of course some Twitter users remembered: there had been a thing with Google before…

“What’s hard to imagine with Vision Pro is the office apps and carrying them outside the home.”

Why does Apple’s boss talk so much?

What say experts who have had the chance to try Vision Pro?

«The resolution of Apple Vision Pro was the best I’ve ever experienced. It definitely delivers on the promise of immersion we all thought would come one day.

But the quality of the pass-through was also first-class. No latency, extremely high quality and it can only get better.”

«I spent some time with Apple Vision Pro.

Apple has a big thing here and they know it. This is the future of computers. My experience was amazing, creepy. Hard to describe, but almost like a dream. The spatial photos/videos gave me goosebumps. This will revolutionize ‘Memories’*.”

“I’m reminded of ‘Minority Report. new meaning.
(…)
After half an hour under Apple’s video glasses, I’m done, I have to return the high-tech gadget. On the one hand, I find that although I got a little warm underneath, I didn’t sweat.
(…)
I feel like I used my neck muscles more than usual in the past 30 minutes. I can imagine wearing the glasses for a few hours, certainly not a whole day. At least not without longer breaks.”

The presentation of the expensive gadget could have been another iPhone moment for Apple, says the experienced German tech journalist. “But just like with the iPhone at the time, it can also mean that it takes a while before it becomes clear how and for what people will actually use the device.”

What does this mean for Zuckerberg and other VR providers?

“I’m a little sorry for Meta.”

Not everyone sees it that way…

“And why? Meta just proved they are by far the leaders in this space. Oculus Quest 3 has most of the features of the Vision Pro, but is 7x cheaper.”

Affordable competitive product? There are also different views on this.

“The Vision Pro is not a competitor to VR glasses such as Metas Quest 2, 3 or Pro or to the HTC Vive XR Elite. While it shares some similarities with these headsets on the outside and has some similar features, it’s a completely different product. What kind of thing Apple is probably also not clear. For now, the Vision Pro is being touted as a kind of Swiss army knife that can do everything from video chatting to gaming and watching movies to working in office programs.”

Why is this real science fiction?

The sensors of the mixed reality glasses should enable something like mind reading, explains an American who says he helped with the research into prototypes.

American computer scientist and artist Sterling Crispin says most of his previous work at Apple is still covered by non-disclosure agreements. However, a few things have become public knowledge through patents and he is allowed to talk about them.

“One of the coolest results was the prediction that a user would click something before actually doing it. It was a lot of work and something I’m proud of. Your pupil reacts before you click because you expect something to happen after the click. So you can get biofeedback from the user’s brain by tracking eye behavior and redesigning the user interface in real time to reinforce this anticipatory pupil response. It’s a gross brain-computer interface through the eyes, but very cool.”

In a mixed reality or virtual reality experience, an AI model tries to predict the mood of the user. The high-tech glasses recognize whether you are curious, anxious, attentive, or if your mind is wandering. All this can be deduced thanks to sensors and measurements such as eye tracking, electrical activity in the brain, heartbeats and rhythms, muscle activity, blood density in the brain, blood pressure, skin conductance, etc.

What’s missing?

“Vision Pro feels like the season finale for Apple. It combines everything the company is particularly good at – cameras, audio, computer vision, batteries, etc. – into the ultimate consumer product.

However, what is still missing is a revolutionary AI for conversations – a Siri 2.0. I expect they will make a major announcement in this area soon.”

What is the future after the first generation?

PS: What does Steve say?

“Someone should ask Steve Ballmer what he thinks of Apple’s Vision Pro. He seems to have a great track record with Apple devices.”
