Pirmin Reichmuth (27) has already slipped into a few roles in his life. Butcher, wrestler, student, entrepreneur. He has been fulfilling a new task for five weeks. At the beginning of May, his wife Marion gave birth to a healthy baby girl. An experience that really put the self-employed physiotherapist off the track, despite the previous training: “I’m really a down-to-earth boy, nothing scares me that easily. But the emotions there really shocked me.”
Apparently much to the delight of the staff in the maternity ward, says the nearly six-foot-tall man. The midwives had to smile from the moment they woke up in the delivery room: “Everything seems small next to me. But when I hold such a small baby in my arms, it probably looks cute.” The 130-kilogram behemoth became a gentle giant. At first he hardly dared to lift his daughter. The baby looked like him on the first day “fragile as glass” Fortunately, the fear of breaking something quickly disappeared.
The emotions, on the other hand, remain. Reichmuth says that nothing has ever aroused such feelings in him. “Sometimes it gets incredibly emotional in the sport. Swinging in front of 50,000 spectators on the Swiss Federal Circuit is also an indescribable feeling. But that’s a whole other level.” And: in sports, the Swiss have everything under control. In the delivery room, on the other hand, he just felt helpless. “As a man you can’t really do much else than hold your wife’s hand and talk to her. You are really at the mercy and just hope that everything will be fine.” The trained butcher takes it with humor: “I couldn’t do much wrong that way.”
This emotional chaos lasted for a while in Central Switzerland. At Zug Cantonal, a week after birth, his mind was not at all concerned. He waved at low ebb. “Honestly, I just didn’t care. There really were more important things than swinging.” A week later, “Piri” had to skip the Lucerne cantonal wrestling festival. The young entrepreneur was in bed with the flu.
The winner of Brünig 2019 had already expected such a forced break: “In the spring I opened my own practice for physiotherapy together with a colleague. Then our daughter was born. It was a really tough time. I wonder how long this will go on.” Should the swinging circus be worried about Reichmuth hanging up his flip flops now that he has so much to do privately?
Wealth can calm down. The little one is of course the most important thing for “Dädi Piri”, as they say in Central Switzerland, and his wife Marion. But her world revolves around many other things, such as swinging. It was clear from the start that the giant from Central Switzerland also wanted to do top sport with a child. His wife makes it possible. Because it is she who gets up at night so that he can get enough sleep and take care of his work and training during the day. If that hadn’t been possible, family planning would have had to wait.
But now the training continues unchanged. Ambition is back. Like the tingling in your fingers, the desire to compete on Sunday. After his four-week break from competition, Reichmuth wants to find his footing again in the cantons of Obwalden and Nidwalden: «I know it’s a terrible expression. But I just take one course at a time on Sundays. I don’t want to rush or force anything.” After four cruciate ligament ruptures and a total of five missed seasons, Reichmuth’s top priority is to be healthy for the Unspunnen-Schwinget at the end of the summer. If he can do that, “Dädi Piri” will be difficult to be stopped.
