What is the ELF?

The European League of Football (ELF for short) is a European football competition that started in 2020 and started its first season in 2021 with eight teams. Since then the league has grown steadily, its third season kicks off on Saturday with 17 teams from nine countries. The league commissioner is Patrick Esume, who is best known as a German TV commentator for NFL games.

How is it played?

The 17 teams are divided into three conferences based on geographical criteria. In this, each team plays the other teams in the conference home and away during the regular season. There are also matches against individual opponents from other conferences. The three conference winners and the top three teams qualify for the playoffs after 13 games. In three playoff rounds, the winner of the ELF will eventually be sought, the final will take place on September 24 in Duisburg.

Where can you see the games?

All matches in the competition can be seen with the paid game pass. In addition, two games per game day will be broadcast on free TV on the Pro Sieben Maxx channel and online at ran.de.

How are the teams composed?

Each team consists of 65 players. A maximum of four players may come from the US, Canada, Mexico or Japan and a maximum of two of these players may be on the field at the same time. Six other international actors from other countries are allowed. The rest of the roster should be made up of local players.

The Swiss national team

With the Helvetic Guards, a Swiss team also participates for the first time this season. The team from Zurich was founded in 2022 and plays its home games in the Lidl Arena in Wil (space for 6000 spectators). With American Norm Chow (77), the Guards got an experienced coach on the sidelines, who could also gain NFL experience.

The most famous player in the selection is running back Silas Nacita (30). The American played college football in the United States and made headlines in 2015 when he was banned from college for illegally taking scholarships. His story was the subject of the successful documentary “Student Athlete”. The Helvetic Guards begin their first ELF season against the Barcelona Dragons on Saturday.
