Even before the final riders of the second round of the Nations Cup of the CSIO St. Gallen it is clear: the victory will be decided between Switzerland and Brazil. With Steve Guerdat and Pedro Veniss keeping their nerves and making no mistakes, things get really exciting again. Both teams have the same number of points and must send a rider to the jump-off.

The Brazilians seem to be the clear winners after the first round. After three good shooting rounds by Mesquito Musa, Pessoa and Mansur, Veniss doesn’t even have to go back on the course, because his team is already in the lead. The Swiss enters the second round with four penalty points. “Leone Jei’s first mistake here in St. Gallen in the Nations Cup irritated me,” said Fuchs, “because I was afraid it would cost us the win.” But because Bryan Balsiger, Martin Fuchs and Guerdat remain clear in the second round and Edouard Schmitz delivers the discarded result with his discard, the thriller begins.

30 hundredths faster – just one drop

Team boss Michel Sorg chose Martin Fuchs for the jump-off. The reason: the long distances between the obstacles are made for his gelding Leone Jei. “Martin and Leone are one of the fastest couples in the world,” confirms Sorg, which is why the team is counting on him. The 30-year-old resists the pressure and delivers a strong round with no knockdown. But is there enough time? She wouldn’t – Yuri Mansur rides Miss Blue Saint Blue 30 hundredths faster, but the mare pulls the post with her hindquarters at the last hurdle.

This knockdown means second place for the Brazilians and the sensational title defense for the Swiss team in St. Gallen. After a failed first round, the Germans saved themselves in 3rd place with a strong second round. “I’m proud of the team, even though I’m the oldest now,” says a cheerful Steve Guerdat after the awards ceremony. “When Venard is in such good shape, he makes my life easier.”
