Alf-Inge Haaland (50) will never forget April 21, 2001. United’s captain Roy Keane takes down the City defender with a deliberate and ugly foul in the Manchester City Derby. Haaland senior never really recovered from this knee injury. Keane later revealed in his autobiography that he deliberately fouled the Norwegian. “Take that, pig, and never stand over me and make fun of fake injuries,” said the Irishman.

It’s Keane’s brutal, years-planned revenge for what happened four years ago. At that point, Keane fell to the ground after a tackle on Haaland. The Norwegian bent over his opponent and loudly complained that he should not feign injury. However, Keane did not do this, because he tore his cruciate ligament during the action.

Respectable career

Keane’s late return meant the end of Haaland’s career, as he was on the field for exactly 63 minutes. Nevertheless, Alfie Haaland has had a respectable career. He played 181 games in the Premier League, relegated with Nottingham and Man City, but also finished a season in third place with Nottingham and Leeds and reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup with Leeds.

Haaland played 34 games for the Norwegian national team. He was at the 1994 World Cup in the US, when Norway qualified for a final for the first time in 56 years. In qualifying for the 1998 World Cup, Haaland also twice met the Swiss national team with Norway, coming on shortly before the end in Norway’s legendary 5-0 win in Oslo.

Reference of the VIP area

Haaland was not a child of grief on the pitch. A few weeks ago, in the semi-finals of the first leg of the Champions League, he proved that he can still behave rudely off the field. Photos show the Norwegian being escorted from the VIP area of the Estadio Bernabeu in Madrid after making derogatory gestures towards Real Madrid fans.

According to Spanish media, the Norwegian even threw peanuts at the local population. Haaland himself downplayed the incident. “We had a good talk. They were not happy when City scored. Typical. Then we had to go 50 yards,” he wrote on Twitter.
