The last Super League season in the well-known ten position is in the past. In the new season, the Swiss championship will be held on the model of the Scottish league. But what does that mean? Blick answers the most important questions about adjusting modes.
A year ago, the Super League clubs argued for an increase in competition. They also wanted a mode change to make the competition more exciting and attractive. First, they were for a playoff mode. At the last minute they turned around and opted for the Scottish model. All this has financial reasons. By adjusting the mode, the clubs hope that relegation worries will become less frequent.
The championship, which starts on July 22, will be decided in two stages. In a first phase, three rounds of eleven matches per club will be played. At the end of this phase – on April 21, 2024 – the twelve teams will be divided into a so-called “Championship Group” (places 1-6) and a “Relegation Group” (places 7-12).
So far: All teams take the points from the first 33 rounds. In both groups there is one round of five matches per club. The clubs in the “Championship Group” play for the national title and places in the European Cup. The clubs in the “Relegation Group” play against relegation, with the bottom placed being relegated directly and the second bottom playing a barrage (two games) against the Challenge League runners-up as before.
The final round in the relegation group (ranks 7-12) will take place on Tuesday 21 May 2024. In the Championship Group (ranks 1-6) round 38 is scheduled for Saturday 25 May 2024.
There are a total of 38 match days in the new Super League – that’s two more than before. Means there are 230 games to watch during the championship. So far, 182 games have been played per season.
The winter break is considerably shortened. On December 17, we will be taking a five-week break. The competition will continue on 20/21. January 2024. In addition, the Scottish model produces significantly more English weeks. Especially from 2024, when UEFA blows up its international competitions. From then on, no championship games during the week will be allowed for another four weeks.
