Two years after his resignation, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (67) is back as the ninth member of the Supervisory Board of Bayern Munich. Chairman Herbert Hainer and honorary chairman Uli Hoeness respond to the chaotic last season of the German record champion and bring an experienced man on board in Rummenigge. In an interview with the German press agency, he now talks about his intentions to return home.
“I feel the need to stand behind the club where I spent 40 years of my life as a player, vice president and CEO,” said the former footballer. He wants to help the club with his football expertise.
However, Rummenigge will take on different tasks than during his last term: “What I will not do is intervene operationally. It is the task of the chairman of the board and the future sports director to conduct discussions and negotiations.” He himself will try to advise the association and “control it accordingly”.
According to Rummenigge, there has been a lot of unrest in the club since the dismissal of Julian Nagelsmann. He now wants to increase values that have long distinguished Bavaria. “Values such as harmony, loyalty, atmosphere, we have to bring those back. We must become one again. FC Bayern has always been successful with that.”
At the end of the interview, the returnee is asked about outgoing CEO Oliver Kahn (53). What is striking: Rummenigge only talks about Kahn as a player, he does not say a word about his actions on the Munich board floor. “I don’t want to say anything negative about Oliver Kahn. I have been very grateful to him since 2001. Without Oliver Kahn, we would not have won the Champions League final in Milan against Valencia.” At that time, the goalkeeper saved three penalties in a penalty shootout. (byl)
