The heavy demolition excavators are now at work in the Olympic city of Cortina. The dilapidated bobsleigh track, which closed in 2008, is in ruins. Then a new ice rink will be built from the ground from July. All in time for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics.

But because even the IOC was against the new construction for sustainability reasons and recommended that the Italians use the existing infrastructure, St. Moritz also developed a secret plan with its natural ice rink to take over the bobsleigh, skeleton and luge races in 2026.

Swiss Olympic expresses itself for the first time

The offer has now been formally sent to Italy. Because in Switzerland, all parties are behind the idea of organizing part of the games in Engadin in 2026: the bobsleigh track, the Swiss Sliding Association and also Swiss Olympic.

Will St. Moritz get the Olympic races in 2026?

Compared to Blick, the Olympic umbrella organization is now commenting on the project for the first time. “Swiss Olympic would support the possible use of the Olympic Bob Run in St. Moritz at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina for reasons of sustainability and in consultation with the partners involved,” the statement said.

Swiss Olympic continues: “We have therefore offered our cooperation to the Italian National Olympic Committee in case the organizers decide not to build their own track in Cortina. However, according to the current state of knowledge, we assume that the ice channel competitions will take place in Cortina. »

Despite the start of construction, the case is not over yet

In view of the demolition of the old infrastructure, it is also firmly assumed in Italy that no races will take place abroad. Despite the two Olympic memorials – both the old course in Cortina and Cesena were closed from the 2006 Games – Italy continues to dream that the new building will pay for itself after the Olympics and generate profits in the future.

So end of the story of possible Olympic races in St. Moritz? No. The question is whether the work on the ice rink, which will cost around 100 million euros, will be completed on time. Also in terms of approvals and objections. As early as the winter of 2024/25, World Cup competitions should take place as the main Olympic rehearsal. The new building, which was pushed through against the resistance of environmental protection groups, is a race against time.

The offer from Switzerland remains valid and the readiness for dialogue is maintained.
