Yann Sommer (34) lifts the bowl into the air on Saturday evening and can call himself German champion. Two days later, the national captain spoke to SRF about his time at Bayern and the championship title.
«There is nothing more beautiful than becoming champion in the last game. It’s a big moment for me, a big title that I’m very proud of,” says Sommer.
Sommer’s time at Bayern was not always rosy. Just when things weren’t going well “The four months I spent at Bayern Munich were very intense. It was also very hectic at times.” Hollywood FC lived up to its nickname this season. Shortly after the championship title, CEO Oliver Kahn and sports director Hasan Salihamidzic had to leave their offices.
When asked about this message, Sommer says: “Of course that was a downer in this situation. We came from the last Bundesliga game, just became champions and then we were told.” He understands that it is a decision of the club. It was sobering, but then we celebrated it extensively, says Sommer.
Sommer does not regret the move to Bayern, on the contrary: “The time was also very instructive for me. A lot has happened so far: we had a goalkeeper change, a coach change and a management change. There was a lot of criticism. With the championship title it is a beautiful end.”
If Sommer stays at Säbener Strasse, next season it will be a battle with Manuel Neuer for the permanent place in the Bayern goal. The 34-year-old has already said he needs playing time. Nati’s goalkeeper describes the relationship between Sommer and Neuer as “good” and “very collegial”.
In an interview with SRF, Sommer does not want to say definitively whether he will still play for Bayern next season: “I’m having a good time here, I still have a two-year contract.” But he could imagine staying in Munich. During the summer holidays there is plenty of time to talk. (jsl)
