England international Ivan Toney will be unable to play a football match until January 16, 2024. This has recently been decided by the English Football Association (FA). Toney broke the association’s betting rules in a total of 232 cases – and should have been suspended for 11 months instead of eight.
The FA published the written statement of reasons for the verdict. It was also revealed that Toney had been diagnosed with a gambling addiction in a conversation with a psychologist. Combined with the fact that he had shown “true remorse”, the sentence was therefore reduced by three months.
The IA also provides concrete examples for the first time. Between August 2017 and March 2018, Toney placed 13 bets against his own team (against Newcastle or Wigan) in seven different matches. Toney took no action in said games, so there was “no evidence he was even capable” of influencing the game’s outcome.
Nevertheless, Toney’s behavior constitutes a violation of the rules, which prohibit players from betting on their own matches or passing on internal information for betting. However, his club stands by him. Brentford FC, for whom Toney has played since September 2020, pledged the necessary support to their starting striker and said the case was closed for him. We look forward to welcoming the player back to training soon.
The player himself, who confessed to the allegations in March, responded to the new revelations with an ominous post. “I used to be quick to defend myself against false accusations. But now I see who believes them and by using that I can find out when to avoid it first.” A statement that raises questions, after all, Toney would have shown insight. (dti)
