Slovenian professional cyclist Primoz Roglic (33) beat the clock from Tarvisio to Monte Lussari in the 18.6km climb by 40 seconds ahead of Geraint Thomas. The 2020 Olympic champion is the new leader in the final stage on Sunday in Rome.
Not far from the Slovenian border, Roglic made up more than the required 26 seconds on Thomas of Great Britain, although his chain came off on a bump just before the finish and he was stopped for a few seconds. “People gave me extra watts,” he says, referring to the many Slovenian fans who came.
Roglic’s reserve for the final day, when traditionally there are no more attacks on the Maglia Rosa, is 14 seconds on Thomas and 1:15 on the Portuguese João Almeida, who also finishes 3rd in the mountain time trial. The Team Jumbo-Visma rider, who became ski jumping world champion in Tarvisio as a junior, would become the first Slovenian overall winner of the Giro d’Italia.
The three-time Vuelta winner, who lost the Tour de France victory three years ago in a time trial on the penultimate day, does not want to celebrate too soon: “It’s not over until it’s over. The round is pretty tough. But the looks good.”
Fabian Lienhard, the last remaining Swiss in the 106th edition of the Tour, is 109th on Saturday, more than ten minutes slower than the big winner of the day. (SDA/nsa)
