The third riser in the Premier League is called Luton Town. The team from the London suburb defeated Coventry City in a penalty shoot-out in the promotion game at a sold-out Wembley.
Luton, who finished third in England’s second division after the regular season, suffered a shock in the 12th minute, captain Tom Lockyer collapsed and had to be carried off the pitch. The all-clear comes during play, Lockyer reacts and is on his way to the hospital.
After the relief, Luton then took the lead in the 23rd minute through Jordan Clark (29). Gustavo Hamer (25) equalizes the game for Coventry in the 66th minute and that means extra time. Luton is closer to victory in this, including a goal being disallowed due to an earlier handball. In the penalty shootout, all players score except Fankaty Dabo (27), who starts as the twelfth shooter and fails.
The rise of Luton is a minor sensation. The club, which played fifth-tier until 2014, plays its games at the dilapidated stadium on Kenilworth Road, which can hold just over 10,000 fans. In addition to Luton, Burnley and Sheffield United will also play in the Premier League next season. (SDA/nsa)
