In Geneva Nicolas Jarry (27, ATP 54) wins the final against Grigor Dimitrov (32, ATP 33). At the Geneva Open, the Chilean defeated the Bulgarian 7: 6 (7: 1) and 6: 1. It is Jarry’s third overall tournament victory and his second this year after a home win in Santiago de Chile in March.
Jarry is clearly pitting himself against the unfit-looking, number 4 seeded former world number three. He also leads in the first set with a break before allowing just one point in the tiebreak. The success is also deserved because the sand specialist knocked out the seed numbers 1 and 3 on the way to the final with last year’s winner Casper Ruud and Alexander Zverev. At the same time, he took revenge on Zverev for the final defeat in Geneva four years ago after match balls were handed out.
For Jarry, who served an 11-month doping suspension in 2020 for using the banned substances Ligandrol and Stanozolol, it is the third tournament victory – the second this year after the home triumph in Santiago de Chile in March. In the world rankings he jumps to 35th place and thus achieves his best ranking to date. (SDA)
