For the ninth time, an ice hockey world championship will be held in Germany. The world federation IIHF awards the 2027 tournament to Düsseldorf and Mannheim at its congress in Tampere on Friday. The German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB) had signed on to host the two venues. The DEB triumphed with 102:34 votes against the only competitor Kazakhstan, which wanted to bring a World Cup to Asia for the first time.
Just like in 2010, the World Cup could start in four years’ time with a match in a football stadium, according to the DEB. At that time, 77,803 spectators set a world record at Schalke, this time there were already talks with the Gelsenkirchen Bundesliga team, but also with the city of Düsseldorf, which operates the stadium of second division Fortuna through a subsidiary.
