Geraint Thomas (37) remains sovereign in the queen stage of the 106th Giro d’Italia. When Santiago Buitrago (23) triumphed solo, the Brit parried his competitors’ few attacks and also wore the leader’s pink jersey in Saturday’s crucial mountain time trial.
The second of three sections through the Dolomites offers little spectacle in the battle for overall victory despite more than 5000 meters in altitude. Just over two kilometers from the finish on the Drei Zinnen at 2304 meters above sea level, the Slovenian Primoz Roglic (33), Thomas’s main competitor, goes on the attack. But the former Tour de France winner from Wales is immediately on Roglic’s rear wheel and does not let go.
At the finish, fifth-placed Thomas lost three seconds to the sprinting Roglic, his lead over the Slovenians ahead of Saturday’s decisive mountain time trial now stands at 26 seconds. A margin that can quickly disappear on the 18.6 km to Monte Lussari.
If you compare the time trials of the recent past, the advantages are in the hands of Roglic, the 2021 Olympic champion in this discipline. In 2020, however, the three-time Vuelta winner lost the leader’s jersey to his compatriot Tadej Pogacar on the penultimate day of the Tour de France. Roglic now wants to turn the tables on Saturday and throw Thomas off the Giro throne.
As third overall, João Almeida (24) can still count on small chances. The Portuguese, who lost almost half a minute to Roglic on Friday, is 59 seconds behind Thomas in the general classification.
The victory of the day in the 19th and third to last section was secured by Colombian Santiago Buitrago from a breakaway group. The 23-year-old climbing specialist triumphs as a soloist with a lead of 51 seconds over Canadian Derek Gee and celebrates his second stage success in the Tour of Italy.
