In-Albon takes care of the qualification: Stricker loses in Paris and has to hope

Dominic Stricker (ATP 116) loses in the third and final qualifying round for the French Open to the Argentinian Thiago Agustin Tirante (ATP 153) in three sets.

After losing the first set 3:6, Stricker shows a strong reaction in the second round and triumphs 6:1 before having to start the service in the third set right at the beginning. In the end it is 1:6.

The 20-year-old from Bern missed his first participation in a Grand Slam tournament in a sporting way. The left-hander, seeded number 9 in qualifying, must now hope for cancellations and luck of the draw to be able to progress to the main draw of the French Open as a lucky loser.

Starting Thursday, three lucky losers will kiss hands on Friday night.

Exploitation of In-Albon

What Stricker couldn’t do, 24-year-old Ylena In-Albon (WTA 148) did two hours later. In the decisive round, In-Albon defeated the favorite Japanese Nao Hibino (WTA 112) 1:6, 6:2, 6:4 despite a false start.

In the deciding set In-Albon trailed 4-2 before winning 14 of the last 16 rallies. Ylena In-Albon qualified for a Grand Slam tournament for the second time after Wimbledon 2022. A year ago she lost in the first round to American Alison Riske 2:6, 4:6. As a qualifier, she only knows who her starting opponent will be on Friday evening after the last qualifying matches.

On Friday, another Swiss, Simona Waltert (WTA 127) will compete against Elsa Jacquemot (WTA 175), in the 3rd qualifying round. (SDA/mpe)
