He once made history as a player for the Swiss national team: Marcel Jenni (49) was one of the heroes at the 1998 home World Cup, scoring two goals against France in the second round – and in the first win against the great power Russia ( 4:2) was decisive. Fourth place at that World Cup remained the national team’s best result for 15 years.
Jenni’s roommate at the time was Patrick Fischer (47), the current national coach. The duo shared a room at four World Championships: 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000. Jenni only found out two months ago that he could now experience a fifth World Championship with Fischer in Riga, as his assistant.
When U20 coach Marco Bayer (50) announced his move to Swissligist GCK Lions, U18 coach Jenni was promoted. And Swiss ice hockey ensures that the U20 coach accompanies the A-Nati to the World Cup. “It’s a great honor for me to work with Patrick,” says Jenni. “I can learn a lot from him. Because we have known each other for a long time, there is mutual understanding. And I can be myself.”
Jenni, who deals with the offensive game, describes Fischer as a coach who is very open to input and sometimes breaks new ground. “He is on the road without blinders. Nowadays you have to develop further, that’s nice.”
More than two decades ago, the 49-year-old was part of a further development as a national team player – but on a completely different level. The ex-striker experienced the phase when the Nati faced relegations from the A group and were able to celebrate re-climbs. “Since 1998 we were no longer relegated. Then something started to grow, but it was still unstable. It was a process. The team has now been consolidated and the gap to the major countries has been closed.”
Ex-Nati coach Ralph Krueger (63) swept the inferiority complex out of the Swiss wardrobe around the turn of the millennium. Fischer has promoted self-confidence in recent years. “Patrick has implemented a new mentality that allows us Swiss to set the pace of the games,” says Jenni.
Despite the self-confident appearance, a bit of modesty remained, every player puts his ego behind for the team. “The guys are top level. The way they appear is not self-evident.” Nor did the quality of the team or the fact that tiny Switzerland not only brought forward NHL players, “but also dominated them in their NHL teams”. Jenny is impressed. And super happy to witness a new chapter in the further development of Swiss ice hockey – this time just behind the ice rink.
