Most titles, most goals, most special matches: these are the records of the AXA Women’s Super League

class=”sc-29f61514-0 kHgAwW”>

This is a paid post brought to you by AXA
The players of FC Zürich will celebrate their 23rd national title in 2022.

The record champions

Logically the most important statistic. But it turns out to be a bit treacherous as all the major women’s teams have changed their structure over the years. Record champions are clearly the women of FC Zurich. However, they are also the perfect example to explain the dilemma. The basis of the women’s section of FCZ is SV Seebach, which was the only one to celebrate twelve titles in the 1980s and 1990s. For a few years the team became FFC Zürich Seebach (title 2008) and later – from 2008 – FC Zürich Frauen. Since then, 13 championship titles have been awarded (none in the 2020 Corona year), ten of which went to Zurich. All in all, there are 23 championship titles for the various “incarnations” of the team. This is followed by: the YB women (including FFC and DFC Bern) with eleven, the FC Luzern women (including SC LUwin.ch and FC Sursee) with five and the DFC Aarau with four titles, namely the first four championships from 1971 to 1974. The FCZ also leads the all-time points table of the top women’s league for YB.

The record player…

Almost all Swiss top players have moved abroad for several years. But one thing remained the same: country striker Fabienne Humm (36) has played continuously for FCZ since 2009. So it is in its 14th season. Your performance data according to the database of soccerdonna.de: 336 games in the premier league, but that’s not all.

Fabienne Humm celebrates one of her many goals.

… is also the record shooter

Fabienne Humm is also the top scorer in the AXA Women’s Super League by a similar margin. She has scored 279 goals so far. There are no signs of it stopping: Humm has scored another 17 goals this season, including five in 18 minutes in the 8-0 win over Basel in September. Incidentally, Humm not only appears in the Swiss record book, but also in that of the World Cup. In 2015, she scored the fastest hat-trick in World Cup history within five minutes against Ecuador (10:1) at the tournament in Canada.

Most Valuable Players

The Soccerdonna website is the counterpart of the well-known transfermarkt.de for women’s football and therefore lists (virtual) market values of many players. Three AWSL actors come up with amounts of 40,000 euros. On the one hand, there is the German youth international Mia Büchele (19), who is loaned from SC Freiburg to Basel. There are also two FCZ players: the two internationals Irina Pando (27, Switzerland) and Marie-Therese Höbinger (21, Austria).

Fairness and team spirit apply in women’s football, here at FC St. Gallen.

The fairest league

What is meant is: in football. In Switzerland. In the AXA Women’s Super League, there were exactly 176 yellow cards in 90 matches in the recently completed 2022/23 qualifying phase. The average is almost two warnings per game and has been stable for years. So far in Super League, men have received 755 yellow cards in 160 games – that’s 4.72 cards/game and more than twice as many as women. 30 direct layoffs for the men compared to two for the women. The AWSL is the fairest highest Swiss football league.

The defender as top scorer

In football, of course, it is very rare for a defender to become the league’s top scorer. Nor is it her job. As a 22-year-old, later national team captain Caroline Abbé was celebrated as the top scorer in the then National League A in 2010. Abbé became known as a central defender, playing 127 times for Switzerland and including three years for Bayern Munich.

YB attracts the most viewers on average.

Most viewers

Women’s football is gaining more and more fans. The occupancy rate of the stadium is at a record high this season. In the Wyler stadium (2000 seats), where YB plays not far from Wankdorf, an average of 453 spectators per game was counted in 2022/23. In second place follows the smaller Zurich Heerenschürli (capacity: 1120. The occupancy rate in the FCZ stadium on the border with Dübendorf ZH is slightly better than in Bern at 32.9 percent. Incidentally, the record for the most spectators in a match dates from between two Swiss club teams from 2022: established when FCZ Frauen won the final of the AXA Women’s Cup against GC 7916 people watched the Zurich derby in the Letzigrund.

The supreme victory

A resounding victory, but also a big question mark. On May 28, 2004 – on the penultimate match day of the season – the ranking women apparently defeated FC Baden with 17:0. This information can be found on the internet, but no further details about this record win. The media also said nothing about the 17 goals. Incidentally, all results of the 2000/01 season can be viewed online. A little better documented is the second highest win, the 12:0 of the defending champion FCZ Frauen on the first day of the 2010/2011 season against FC Thun. This result is especially astonishing because wins often happen towards the end of the season and rarely right at the start. One of the three double goal scorers was Sandra Betschart, the current General Manager of the YB women. The 12:0 was the first game under the then new FCZ coach Markus Kummer. His tenure started brilliantly, but ended after just six months as Zurich was well behind in the championship. YB eventually became champion. In short: the 12:0 had no great effect.

The wildest results

With age and improved structures, slopes and high results in women’s football are decreasing. Nevertheless, a few delicacies or games that were of course worthwhile as a spectator. On May 13, 2001, Zurich defeated Malters 6-5, so eleven goals – well distributed. Exactly 14 days later, the Lucerne women from Malters also provided a similar spectacle, in the next away game at YB: this game ended 5:5. Other notable results from the years: Liechtenstein from Ruggell defeated FCZ 6-4 in 2002, later that season YB also defeated Zürich 11-3. So there were a total of 14 goals here, but worse distributed.

A word in conclusion: Some examples show that it is still not easy to collect records in women’s football. The online archives are incomplete and don’t go much further than 2000. It’s quite possible that one or the other top value in the 20th century was bigger or better. This record book is an attempt to lay an initial foundation.
