It is a moment that professional cyclist Stefan Bissegger (24) will never forget. On April 28 at 17:56, Oliver sees the light of day. “The whole birth process was quite taxing on Celine. I thought after three hours it would all be over – it wasn’t quite like that. But when we got to hold our little baby in our hands shortly after, it was beautiful – just unreal. An experience that will last forever.”
We meet the couple three weeks later. Namely where the wedding parties with friends and family had been celebrated last winter: in the Kartause Ittingen. “It’s wonderful here. Even now, while walking with the pram. We associate a lot with this place,” says Céline. The Basel resident is happy to have had her husband by her side for a few weeks. “But I would have preferred that he had been gone longer,” she says with a smile.
How is that possible? Simple: Bissegger had big plans for Paris-Roubaix, the most famous cobbled race in the world. But two weeks earlier he fell on “Over Vlaanderen” and broke his left wrist. “Annoying, sure. Because I was in very good shape. And because I had to keep my hand stable after the operation, I couldn’t help Céline much. Nevertheless, it was very nice to spend the time together at home. »
Bissegger has been thinking about his comeback for a long time, the bandage on his hand is gone, he is already training again. His next big goal is the Tour de Suisse. He already wants to shine at the opening time trial in Einsiedeln SZ on June 11. “I want to win there,” he says. Until then, Bissegger will spend several more hours on the road bike and time trial machine. In winter he wants to move with his family to his new home in Eschlikon TG.
The question many parents are asked remains: Why is their child named Oliver? Bissegger: “We had an app where you could like or dislike suggested names. This ultimately resulted in a list of ten names. We liked Oliver the most.” But the name is not important anyway. “Ultimately, our child has to appreciate what he has – also that he can grow up in Switzerland. And he has to treat everyone with respect.”
One thing is for sure: Céline and Stefan will not post pictures of Oliver on social media as long as he is still small. They didn’t even make a note of the birth. “We like to keep our private lives separate and don’t have to share everything,” he says. In terms of drivers, there are probably many drivers who do not know about their birth. “Not everyone has to. But we’ll probably post some more,” says Bissegger with a smile.
