More than an hour has passed since the 1-1 draw between FCB and Lugano. Enough time actually to come down, to process his statements as a coach. But Heiko Vogel (47) just doesn’t feel like diplomacy. And starts a rant against referee Lukas Fähndrich, who has everything. An excerpt: “I am very concerned about whether this person can referee matches. The arrogance he has!”

Background: After the final whistle of Lugano’s match, Vogel sees two yellow cards from Fähndrich within seconds. The first card for contemptuous clapping towards the umpire team, the second after these words to the umpire: “I hope I don’t have to see them again.”

The fact that his FCB scored a point with a bang and only thanks to some brilliant saves by goalkeeper Marwin Hitz, that the red-blue fell far short of its claims in the championship and that the vital European Cup qualification is in acute danger, is for Vogel at the moment not in the foreground.

It keeps popping

Again there is a bang between Vogel and a referee. The cards against him have been a common thread through his time as interim coach since February: sometimes yellow for applauding, sometimes for complaining, sometimes for waving – in the Super League, in the Cup, in the Conference League. Just over a week ago, at 1: 6 in St. Gallen, Vogel was locked in the stands after the fourth league warning. Back in Geneva next Thursday.

This casts a bad light on Vogel in the first place. Also because he promised to improve after every incident – and still collects maps diligently. “I am not a child of grief and I am determined to calm down,” he said after the recent incident.

But FCB is also damaged by Vogel’s behavior. Because it is the language of (sore) losers to blame the referee for their own sporting failure. And the already ailing club doesn’t need bad publicity.

Vogel’s behavior reflects on the players

It even gives the impression that Vogel is acting like an arsonist. Four red cards for FCB in the last three league matches? For many observers an expression of Vogel’s behavior on the sidelines. Similarly, with goalkeeper Marwin Hitz (35), a level-headed, well-considered and self-critical character, now hands out against the referees for the second time in a short time. And, without giving specific examples, Fähndrich even accuses FCB players of insults below the belt.

When asked if his behavior would become a problem, Vogel said, “What’s the point of this question? It implies the answer. I say ‘no’, but feel free to write ‘yes’. Emotions are part of it. The ref waited just until I gave him something. I did him a favor, my mistake. I’m not allowed to deal cards, only him – and that’s just one-sided.” Recently, a bird who was in a good mood at the time said in a major Blick interview, “I’m a sore loser.”

Is Heiko Vogel still a good role model?

In the eyes of FCB legend Erni Maissen (65), Vogel gambled away the credit after Lugano’s match. “I can’t see it anymore! With his behavior, Vogel himself is the worst. I’m not surprised that players are not disciplined with such a coach on the sidelines,” says Maissen in Blick Kick – and then settles for Vogel: ” As a coach he was a mistake.” (video above)

With his motivational skills and tactical tricks, Vogel narrowly missed the first European Cup final for a Swiss team. The fans in Basel love him for that. But on social media there is little understanding of how to deal with the referees and distract from one’s own problems in the league. Tenor: embarrassing and damaging to FCB’s image!

After the season, Vogel resigns as interim trainer. In order to be able to devote himself fully to his task as head of sports. As such, he is even more in demand as a role model than a coach. But is he still a good role model? Suppose next season an FCB player or the new coach Timo Schultz (45) is thrown off the field due to unsportsmanlike behaviour: how will Vogel, who himself regularly overstepped the mark, credibly put his subordinates and coaches in their place? ? way?
