Ombudsman agrees with SRF-Ruefer

After the 5-0 win in the European Championship qualifier against Belarus, SRF commentator Sascha Ruefer (51) came under fire. For once, though, it wasn’t about what he said. It’s about what he didn’t say: Ruefer and his SRF colleagues have refrained from commenting on the political situation in Belarus. And that while footballers who are not on the line of autocrat Alexander Lukashenko (68) are excluded from the national team.

For Lars Bünger, this attitude is a no-go. The chairman of the Swiss-German human rights organization Libereco complained to the SRF ombudsman about the reporting. His complaint has now been rejected, the “Tages-Anzeiger” reports. According to the reasoning, the principle of fairness was not violated.

At the World Cup, Ruefer was reprimanded

In December, Ruefer was reprimanded by the same ombudsman for making non-objective statements during a World Cup match about the awarding of the tournament to Qatar. Now Ruefer has been silent to Belarus and he is right.

Bünger, who was dismissed with his complaint, describes the silence as a “sign of poverty”. In his opinion, SRF should at least have pointed out that the poor performance of the Belarusians is related to the politically motivated exclusion of certain players.

But Bünger can book a mini success: SRF apologizes for the choice of words of moderator Rainer Maria Salzgeber (53) and expert Benjamin Huggel (45). The two apparently reacted too harshly to Bünger’s criticism. (cmu)
