And goodbye! Referee Lukas Fähndrich shows FCB coach Heiko Vogel yellow and red.

To the game? After the end of the game, no one thinks anymore. After the 1-1 draw between FC Basel and Lugano, it’s all about one thing: the scenes before and after the final whistle – and Lukas Fähndrich. After the match, the referee was the target of massive criticism from the Basel camp. But one after the other.

In extra time, there was a scuffle in the Ticino penalty area between Lugano goalkeeper Saipi and FCB defender Calafiori. Both go to each other and see yellow. As it is Calafiori’s second, he will be sent off and next Thursday in Geneva he will be the fourth FCB player to be suspended alongside Xhaka, Burger and Adams.

Bird vs ensign

But now it really gets going: FCB coach Heiko Vogel, who disagrees with Calafiori’s verdict, applauds the referee team after the final whistle. Flag? Immediately shows Vogel yellow. Soon after, the two meet on the field. After a short dispute, Fähndrich again gets yellow. Vogel will later say, “I told him I hope not to see him again.”

The people of Basel are boiling with anger. Not because of Fähndrich’s decision, but because of the way the 38-year-old from Central Switzerland led the game. Captain Fabian Frei and goalkeeper Marwin Hitz want to tell him personally. With their children at hand (sic!) they knock on the door of the referee’s booth, shout loudly and want to talk to the ensign. But the door remains closed – for now!

Hitz with daughter against ensign

Then Hitz appears before the journalists. The 35-year-old saved FCB a point with his saves in the second half. Now the otherwise sober goalkeeper with his daughter Joséphine by the hand attacks the referee head-on: “It’s embarrassing. In the end, the Wild West rules here. During the game, the referee insults the players – and that wasn’t the first time from him today .” Hitz mockingly: “He must have had a lot of fun leading the game.”

Then he gets serious again. Says it was an easy game for a referee. Asks why you can’t knock on the door after the game and talk to Fähndrich. And that this is the case when someone has something to hide. Hitz concludes: “I heard from teammates that communication was subpar. That makes me sad.”

Ensign against accusations

Puuuh – strong stuff! What does the attacker say about this? At Blick’s request, Fähndrich comes out of the cab – and strikes back. “I can confirm here that I am not insulting any player. There were clear words between me and some of the players, although I must say that the starting point for the heated arguments were the players. It is not right to accuse the referee of insults without concrete to provide evidence. But to put it in the room like that.” On this point, statement prevails against statement.

On the other hand, when Basler accuses Fähndrich of not allowing himself to be talked to after the match, the referee gets stuck. When asked why he didn’t let Hitz and Frei into the locker room, he replied: “I didn’t realize that. No one asked if he could come into the locker room. I’m always willing to communicate. Maybe not right after the end of the game. game. After five minutes of cooling down, conversation makes more sense.” Blick says: Hitz and Frei expressed their desire for a conversation with their behavior in front of the umpire’s booth, it’s hard to imagine not noticing or interpreting this differently.

The last performance on this memorable afternoon is by Heiko Vogel. He doesn’t mince words either: “I have serious concerns about this person’s ability to direct games. The majority of referees do a good job, but the arrogance that Fähndrich displays is unbelievable.” Vogel confirms Hitz’s allegations of insult, and finally says: “The umpires can do anything, they can ignore someone knocking on their door. At some point I’ve had enough!”

Will there be a suspension for the penultimate game of the season in Geneva after Vogel’s yellow-red? It is quite possible that the departing interim coach and later “sole team leader” will also watch the last game against GC from the stands because of his comments.
