It is a shitstorm that raged over Canadian Joe Veleno after his foul against Nino Niederreiter (30) on Saturday. Criticism is not spared in his home country either. No one understands the kick of the 23-year-old Detroit Red Wings forward. German ex-international and Sport1 pundit Rick Goldmann says: “I can’t believe what he’s doing there. This is a bottomless cheek. He can rub his shin here, he can go in there and cut everything open, because in between the skate and where the shin guard ends, most players have no protection. It’s extremely dangerous and I hope he gets suspended after that.”
Niederreiter himself was upset after the game. “Things like that just don’t belong in the sport. I have a lot of trouble with that sort of thing,” de Churer told Blick, asking for Veleno to be suspended. “I really hope the IIHF will do something about it.”
Six years ago, the Slovenian Ziga Jeglic (35) was only suspended for two games at the World Cup in Paris because of a kick that narrowly hit the Swiss Thomas Rüfenacht (38) in the neck.
The NHL took a different approach in 2007 when Chris Simon (51, New York Islanders) kicked Fin Jarkko Ruutu (47, Pittsburgh Penguins) on the ice: 30 game suspensions.
How long will Veleno be put on hold? Actually, the tournament should be over for him. Especially since he is not a blank slate. Three years ago he was suspended for a match at the U20 World Cup for an attempted headbutt.
