The Arizona Coyotes’ plans for a new home have faded to dust. A full-fledged residential and entertainment complex would be built in Tempe, a suburb of Phoenix, at a cost of $2.3 billion. Before the vote, NHL boss Gary Bettman announced that the Coyotes could stay in Arizona “forever” with a new hall.
The city of Phoenix and the operator of the international airport had questioned the project on noise and safety grounds, the area is below the approach and departure strips of Phoenix International Airport. The Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) had previously stated that the area is “not compatible with housing projects”. The plan was nevertheless voted on by the people – and clearly rejected. The Coyotes have since announced they will sue the city for damages.
After relocating from Winnipeg in 1996, the franchise shared an arena in downtown Phoenix with NBA stars the Phoenix Suns. In 2003, the move to the Gila River Arena in Glendale (also a suburb of Phoenix) followed, but the franchise soon ran into problems there. In 2009, owner Jerry Moyes bankrupted the club, after which the NHL rejected an offer from Canada (Hamilton, Ontario) and took over the fate of the Coyotes for four years.
Though new owners arrived in 2015, the Troubles remained a loyal companion to the Coyotes. The operators of the Glendale arena have terminated the contract with the franchise at the end of the 2022 season. Since then, the Coyotes have played in front of about 5,000 spectators at Arizona State University’s arena. The plan was to stay in the “Mullet Arena” until 2025 and then move permanently to a new home.
The Coyotes have made the playoffs seven times in 26 seasons since 1997, going three rounds ahead. The NHL has received offers from Canada (Québéc) and Texas (Houston) for the franchise.
