“There’s never been so much happening in Thurgau!”

Shane Dändliker has nothing to do with Domenic Schneider’s concentrated power. After a few moments, the final course is determined.

Dark storm clouds gather over Zurich’s Allmend Brunau shortly before 5 p.m. on Sunday evening. Thunder rolls herald a storm. At that moment, Domenic Schneider (28) steps into the sawdust ring in the middle of the fairground. The final course of the Zurich cantonal wrestling festival is coming up. Fest favorite Schneider meets Zurich outsider Shane Dändliker (28). In the stands, eyes dart from the sawdust ring in the center of the arena to the ever-darkening sky. “They just have to move on”, mutters a concerned festival visitor, while the neighbor is already putting on his cape.

The Thurgau colossus and the non-Swiss Zurich come together in the sawdust. And as if Schneider has heard the onlookers’ concerns about the weather, he makes short work of Dändliker. After a few seconds his opponent is on his back, “Dodo” celebrates his second victory in a row after the Basellandschaft last week. Although the air is now opening its floodgates, the genteel Thurgau is in no hurry to leave the festival grounds.

ogle with the Muni

On the one hand, he still has to decide whether he wants to take home his living prize: the stately Limousin-Muni Zeppelin from Aargau, worth some 6,000 francs. “I have two cattle at home on the farm that need to be covered. So it would actually be practical now,” says Schneider very pragmatically. Breeder Marcel Annen would love to drive the 750-kilogram fellow to Dodo in Thurgau. “The tailor Domenic is such a down-to-earth man. It would be a huge honor if my Muni to live in his stable.”

Like a country bumpkin in the city

On the other hand, the farmer from Thurgau really doesn’t feel like diving into the urban traffic jungle by car after winning the festival. Getting there in the morning was a bit of a challenge. “Fortunately we arrived early, the traffic was not too bad anyway. But I must say, as a country child I am not used to so many light signals. I bought my ticket in Thurgau. There is never so much happening on the street as here in the city.” The driving instructor also passed through Kreuzlingen. “But there were no trams with permanent priority,” laughs the Swiss. The short city tour of Zurich clearly didn’t strain Schneider in the long run – as confident as he swung through this festival.

And what about the ammunition? After some time thinking, Domenic Schneider decides against the animal and for money. Breeder Marcel Annen can understand. And Muni Zeppelin probably won’t mind either. A summer on the alm is coming for him.
