Urs Meier has been calling for the professionalization of our referees for years. The former top referee dreams of conditions like those found in professional football players, “with a coach, fitness coach, therapist, nutritionist and even media training,” he says. Although much has happened in recent years, we are still miles away. In contrast to professional colleagues abroad, our referees not only earn less, they also train themselves and also reach into their own wallets.

Schärer is 80 percent employed by the association

With the exception of figurehead Sandro Schärer, who is 80 percent employed by the union, all referees still work “on the side”. The trained agronomist Esther Staubli, one of the best referees in the world for many years, still works part-time at the agricultural school in Zollikofen BE.
